Taking on 2013 and hoping to revitalize my life

I just finished reading a blog post about “inspiration porn” and self-help fatigue. It was on Dumb Little Man, a blog I frequent on a regular basis to get my next hit. The reason I call it a hit is because this post made me realize that my over-indulgence in personal development reading (and not just online, but books too) is akin to addiction. I know addiction seems like a strong word but hear me out.

The reason why it is like addiction is that I am often looking for my next high by reading another blog post on how to improve instead of actually doing something to achieve my goals. It feels like I am doing something, I mean I am reading about how to improve and this has been helping me to an extent, but eventually you need to bite the bullet and do more than read. You have to work at improving. W-O-R-K, that 4-letter word that involves action and purpose.

So I am going to take some of the author’s advice (not sure that I agree with it all) and I am going to try to unplug a bit more. I still want to keep blogging and I still want to keep up the job search but I need to spend less time poking around online and wasting time. It is time to take some action. No more planning to act, but actual action, even if it is not 100% thought-out, sometimes you have to just do stuff.

It’s going to be a fantastic week weather-wise so I plan to spend more time outdoors and actually do things around my house. Laundry will be hung on my line, my bike will get air in it’s tires, my lawn will get raked and that’s just for starters.

I’m a list maker and I’ve already started making mine for the week. I want to keep it doable so I will keep tasks as small as possible and break down big tasks into smaller chunks, I’m the type that needs baby steps. One thing  I have already signed up for is David Suzuki’s challenge to spend 30 minutes in nature each day for 30 days, starting on May 1. I think that being out in nature will help me get some perspective and hopefully some focus as well. If nothing else, being outside is good for the soul. You should join too. Let me know if you do and we can chat about how it’s going and perhaps inspire each other.

I’ve also got a challenge for myself for May, you can find it on my 52 Actions page, called Plank a day in May. Yep, I’m planning to plank every day in May.  Not the stupid plank in dangerous places kind of planking, just regular old fitness planking at home. I want to build up some core muscles and this seems like a good way to do it. I’ll let you know how long I can plank on the first day and the last day to see how much improvement there is. Hopefully it will be awesome 🙂 And if you don’t know what planking is, here is a quick how-to video.

  1. Oh oh oh LOL this title is SO rich!

  2. I’m so far off the self-improvement porn, I’d need to drive to get within a mile of it.
