Hung-over From Vancouver Jet Lag

Apr 27 - I'm grateful to be heading to Vancouver!!

Apr 27 – I’m grateful to be heading to Vancouver!!

Last week was pretty spectacular!! On April 27th, Sven and I jetted off to Vancouver. Actually, the first plane we took had propellers but it was still pretty exciting to be heading out West.

Our first flight was delayed which meant we missed our connector but that did not dampen our spirits. We still managed to make it to Vancouver in the same day so everything was good (even if it did feel like 4am by the time we got to the hotel).

The next day was a vacation day, woo hoo!! Sven and I stumbled forth from our hotel room and went to awesome Stanley Park where the trees were in bloom and the grass was green and it felt like Spring. We walked and took a horse drawn carriage and saw totem poles and went to the aquarium.  DSC_0831DSC_0848DSC_0840DSC_0880

It was just an all around great day. By the afternoon, the sun came out in full force and we were able to take off our coats while watching the water antics of the beluga whales and dolphins.

After a day filled with walking we needed to find something to eat. And what better thing to eat than sushi in Vancouver? Sven pulled out his iphone and asked Siri where we should eat that was close by and inexpensive. She pointed us to Sushi Mart. It was just a tiny place that didn’t look like much but it had a line up out the door by the time we left. Thanks Siri.

IMG_20140428_184406On day 2 I had to go to work 😦

I went to my work conference after breakfast with Sven and then he was on his own. The conference wasn’t too bad and I think I did a pretty OK job of networking. I came home with quite a few business cards so I’m satisfied with my performance 😉

IMG_20140430_134405 Tuesday evening was a networking event. It was fine, I stayed for a couple of hours and then snuck out about half an hour before it was over. They had a few fun things there like a photo booth, a guy doing caricatures and some video thing. I had my caricature done and I have to say, I think it looks a lot like me. Plus, I’m fairly skinny in it so I think it’s my favourite picture of me, lol.

Wednesday was more work but afterwards Sven and I went for a walk. I told him there was a beach on one side of Stanley Park and I wanted to go there. His phone gallantly provided directions and I was able to put my toes in English Bay. I’m sure it was pretty polluted but I wasn’t the only one in the water. After the beach we headed back towards the hotel and stopped for dinner in a pub. We were lucking out with the food so far as everything was delicious.

On Thursday the conference ended early and Sven and I set off for Chinatown. One minute everything was lovely and the next minute we were in a pretty sketchy area. Luckily we turned a corner and things got better again. We went to Dr. Sun Yet-Sen’s Classical Chinese Garden and then had Vietnamese food for dinner. My friend Jess recommended the restaurant so it was a winner yet again.

Check out the fish Sven ordered! It was totally not what either one of us was expecting and once it arrived I could not stop laughing. It was so funny when Sven was cutting into it. But even with the head still on, we persevered and ate it. It was excellent!

On Friday we boarded a bus and went to the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain. Sven backed out of the ziplining but we still had a good time. I think Capilano was my favourite part of the trip; the big trees in the coastal rainforest, the smell of nature. It was very nice. The swaying suspension bridge was not so nice and caused me some stress on the way over it, but I sucked it up and went anyway. You only live once and it was part of our Vancouver adventure.

For dinner we went to a Greek restaurant (also great food) and then took the seabus to Vancouver North. It wasn’t exactly the boat cruise that I wanted to take but it was the only substitute I could manage. (I thought we might take a boat cruise on our first day but it was too chilly for most of the day.) On the north side of Vancouver we found a small market close to the ferry terminal. Unfortunately we ate too much Greek food to partake in any of the edibles from the food trucks but it was still pretty cool.

Finally we crashed in the hotel and flew out on Saturday morning.

Overall, it was a big success. Sven and I walked and walked and walked, and we ate gelato 3 times, and we had a favourite breakfast place, and it was warm enough to wear shorts on more than one day, and we just hung out and enjoyed each other. It was a great trip and I didn’t want to come home.

In fact, it’s Wednesday and I’m still a little hung-over from Vancouver jet lag.

Adventure is Coming My Way!

I’m uber excited!!! Adventure is coming my way! During the last few days, I decided to take my kids on a road trip to see Katy Perry this summer and my boss asked me if I want to go to Vancouver next month!!

I know, can you believe it?

The road trip was kind of a spur of the moment idea and will cost big bucks but the 3 of us will have an A-MAZING time. I was actually considering not going when I discussed it with Sven and he said I should definitely do it.

I thought he would be all practical and say it was a lot of money, but what he said was, “Do it, you won’t regret it.” And I’m quite sure that I won’t regret it. Plus, it will be so exciting and it will make an awesome memory so I put down a deposit and we are doing it!!!

vancouverThe day after that, my boss asked me if I wanted to go to a conference in Vancouver. First of all, I’ll be working a booth and forced to network which I hate, but the conference is definitely going to interesting and I`ll be exposed to a different culture, plus I get to go to Vancouver and I have never been before! I’m so excited about going that even the thought of exploring Vancouver by myself has not got me down. I’m going to bring my camera, take some pictures and just enjoy.

I have been itching to go somewhere for ages and this trip to Vancouver falls on a week that I can actually go and leave the kids with their Dad. And it will be Springtime and there’ll be mountains and the Pacific ocean and flowers and grass. I am all over that! Can you tell I’m excited?

I was hoping for travel adventures with other people but that plan fell through so I’m just going to suck it up and have my own adventure! And then have another one with my kids. Adventures are good for the soul so I’m glad that I have grabbed both opportunities.

I think there are always the possibilities of adventures, you just have to agree to take part in them. I’m really excited that I said YES!

My Life Needs More Adventure

What would happen if I got on a plane tomorrow? What would happen if I called in sick and told my ex I needed him to take the kids for the weekend? What would happen if I just ran away for a few days?

Somewhere warm and tropical and away from here. Just me and a beach and a good book. Maybe some fruity cocktails.

I bet the world wouldn’t fall apart. I bet life would just keep ticking on. Tick, tick, tick.

I wish I was going to do it. But I’m pretty sure I won’t. I’m pretty sure I’ll go into the office just like every other day. My life needs more adventure.

Dreaming of Vacation

DidgeridooJanuary was supposed to be about dreaming for me and I’ve been dreaming about going on vacation. It started with talks of going down south and then morphed into discussing a trip to Australia. But as it gets closer to making a decision, I think that Australia probably isn’t going to happen.

I just got my ex’s work schedule for the next several months and it would appear that he has the market cornered on travel. That means that I have my kids most of the time for May, June and July and it also means that I have to save at least a couple of weeks of my vacation for the summer. Since I only have 3 weeks of vacation, I don’t think I can make the long trek to Australia this year.

It hasn’t been 100% decided, but I think it is probably 75% decided that it is a ‘no go’. It doesn’t mean that I can’t go anywhere. I can still make plans for a week down south in-between my ex’s frequent work jaunts. And I think I can probably get creative with some long weekends in there. Or even regular weekends. We live in a beautiful area and a few hours drive will take us to other beautiful areas.

And if you are exploring with a great companion, it will still be fun.

My Head is Spinning

This has been a whirlwind of a week. The kind that both drags a little and makes your head spin at the same time.

Here’s a quick recap:

I broke up with Sven on Monday. It was actually a bit harder than I expected. He seemed fairly surprised, made a bit of an attempt to make things better but in the end I think he might have been relieved that he had one less person complicating his life. We left the door wide open for future discussions, once he gets his life together, but overall it seems to have been the right decision.

I met Dan for the first time on Monday. He drove 2 hours to see me, we went out for dinner, and then a drive (almost hit a deer) and then I kissed him good night to stop his nervous chatting. I don’t know why he was so nervous, first date jitters I guess. I wasn’t really nervous at all, probably because I have done the whole first date thing many, many times. Anyway, things went really well and we made plans for Wednesday night.

Tuesday night I played badminton – yay!!

The 2nd date with Dan (on Wednesday) also went well. We got some donairs and watched a movie at my place. He told me his life story and apparently this is the break up of his 2nd marriage – eep. In spite of him now having 2 strikes, in my 3 strike policy, we had a great time.

Dan was not the only person I had been chatting with online and I also had plans to meet someone different on Wednesday night to play pool.  However, I hadn’t heard from this other guy for several days so I just figured it was off. This happens ALL OF THE TIME  in the online dating world. You just stop hearing from people and since I hadn’t talked to the guy since the weekend, I just figured it was not happening. However, he messaged me while I was out with Dan, apparently I stood him up. Oops!

Thursday night was quiet, a nice break after my busy week so far. I called my Mom and she told me that she is going to Australia this Spring!!! Wha??? That made my head spin with thoughts that I should go to Australia with my Mom. Did I mention that Dan and I had already been discussing a get-away down South within the next couple of months? I know, who makes plans to go down south with someone they just met? They weren’t solid plans, just the beginning of discussions. Both of us are itching to go somewhere and both of us need someone to go with. However, the whole Australia thing makes me think about going there with Mom. (and maybe Dan…)

Yesterday at work, these arrived for me in the middle of our staff meeting:

bouquet

My face was so red when the CEO gave them to me. I was both shocked and pleased to say the least. No one has bought flowers for me in a very long time. Dan just earned some brownie points.

Dan and I went out again last night and we are seeing each other again today :). I’m going to renew my passport next week. My head is still spinning and everything seems a little surreal. Things will be back to normal crazy once I get the kids back next week though.

But I need to make a decision, very soon, about a little excursion to Australia.

I’ve Regained my Employee Status

It was a little surreal being back in the land of paid employment today after being off work for a year, but I lived to tell about it so I’m pretty sure I’ll go back tomorrow.

Everyone at work seems really nice. The CEO is seriously one of the nicest CEOs I’ve ever met. She is uber-friendly and makes me feel at home.

I got the office policies manual today. I work with a small group but you can tell that it is government-funded based on the size of the policy manual. That sucker was pretty big for a group of 15 people.

I found out today that the office closes for 2 weeks at Christmas. 2 weeks paid at Christmastime and it does not affect our vacation. I wanted to do a little dance right there.

I went to my first meeting today. It wasn’t a meeting that I needed to attend, but it was great to sit in on it as it gave me a better idea of what some of the people in my office do. I feel like I will piece together the puzzle that is my new job sooner than later so that’s a good thing.

I got several congratulatory messages this morning, all of them cheering me on for my first day of work. Both of my sisters (of course) and a couple of friends. I was super pumped to know that I have folks who care about my success. Surprisingly I did not hear from Sven. Or perhaps he did send me a message on his broken texting app and I just never got it. I’m guessing it was option A. I don’t know what happened with Sven, but things have just petered out. No one has called anything off but isn’t it weird that I have not heard from him on my first day at my new job?

Anyway, I’m not letting him spoil my fun. I had a great first day and I’m looking forward to going back tomorrow. I do miss my couch and my yoga pants a bit but I’m sure the pay check will help me get over that quickly.

More Vacation Fun

sea cavesWe went on a trip to see some sea caves one day this week. It didn’t rain at all that morning but when we got to the sea caves, guess what? Rain. Luckily for us the rain didn’t start to really pour until we had completed about 80% of the tour. We soldiered on in some sexy rain gear but ended up cancelling the rest of the plans for the day.

on a horse

Me on a horse!!

Today we went to visit a family friend who owns horses and then spent the rest of the day at the beach jumping waves. My other sister and her kids were able to join us and everyone had a fantastic time.

Our friend gave everyone the chance to take a short ride on one of the horses. Most of the kids had never ridden before so it was pretty exciting. I’ve only been on one horse before at around age 10 so I jumped at the chance to try it again.

We went to a rather chilly beach today that is known for it’s great surf. The water was so cold that the adults didn’t last too long out in the crashing water but I didn’t want to miss out on the wave-jumping so we braced ourselves and charged into the frigid ocean with smiles on our faces. How is it that kids are oblivious to the cold?

One bad thing about today, I was not on top of the sunscreen and it shows :(. Hopefully the red will fade quickly.
